Helpful Spring-Time Reminders
Now that the weather is starting to warm back up and everyone is eager to get to work on the yard and the cleaning out the garage, here are some helpful common-sense reminders before you get started.

1. Warm up or stretch before exercising or other physical activities, such as gardening.

2. Maintain proper posture.

3. Wear comfortable, low-heeled shoes.

4. Sleep on a mattress of medium firmness to minimize any curve in your spine.

5. Lift with your knees, keep the object close to your body, and do not twist when lifting.

6. Quit smoking. Smoking impairs blood flow, resulting in oxygen and nutrient deprivation to spinal tissues.

7. Maintain a healthy diet and weight.

8. Avoid prolonged inactivity or bed rest.

9. Work with your doctor of chiropractic to ensure proper body mechanics.

Stress Relief
Stress has become a fact of life, and for some, the daily norm. Although occasional stress can help improve our focus and performance, living with chronic stress can backfire by causing anxiety, depression, and serious health problems. Understanding who we are, knowing our major struggles, putting them in perspective, and taking action can help us deal with stress.

Give Exercise a Shot

To get the best of both worlds, affecting the mind through the body while getting into good physical shape, try exercise. In one study, a group of lung cancer patients increased their hope due to exercise. Exercise can also reduce depression and improve wound healing in the elderly. Tai chi, which works for people of all ages, may enhance heart and lung function, improve balance and posture, and prevent falls, while reducing stress.

Dr. Andy Morgan
Dr. Andy is busy meeting and reinserting himself into the Hampton Roads community. Dr. Andy is a 1991 graduate of Salem HS where he made a name for himself in track. At the time he was posting times of 4:35 in the mile and 2:00 in the 800m. His academics combined with his school leadership garnered him a congressional nomination to the US Naval Academy. He decided to follow a family tradition of entering Virginia Tech Engineering as a Corp of Cadet. During his tenure he earned the prestigious "True Grit" award. Later, Dr. Andy decided to pursue his dream of becoming a chiropractor and entered and completed the necessary courses at Old Dominion University with a degree in Exercise Science. After graduating cum laude in 2004. He began the doctorate program at Sherman College of Straight Chiropractic in 2004 and graduated March 22, 2008. It is with great pride that we accept him into the practice and believe he will have tremendous success caring for the Hampton Roads community. Please feel free to come in and visit. Dr. Andy's hours are M-F 9-1, 2-6 and Saturdays 9-11.

Newest Members
We would like to recognize our newest members. Kevin Whaley and Leo Anthony. Kevin will be playing football at the University of Minnesota. He is adding more size to his already muscular frame in anticipation that he will see playing time as a freshman. Mr. Leo Anthony is an ODU Hall of Famer that averaged 31 points per game and once scored 60 points in one game. He was ODU's first All-American and twice the Virginia Player of the Year. His coaching accolades include records of over 400 wins in both basketball and golf. His most notable golfer was the great Curtis Strange. We are very proud to have these two greats at our facility.

Welcome D.J. Dozier
I am glad to introduce our newest instructor. D.J. Dozier. D.J. is a Virginia Beach native who graduated from Kempsville HS in 1983. He played football, basketball, and baseball. He was drafted as a high schooler for baseball. He rejected many offers for basketball too. He decided on his first love football. At that time he was the most highly sought out football player in the history of Virginia Beach. He was the Tidewater Player of the Year who became an All-American and went on to play for Penn State under the great coach Joe Paterno. At Penn State he became the all-time leading rusher and won the MVP in the Fiesta Bowl when D.J. scored the winning touchdown that helped Penn State beat Miami for the National Championship in 1987. After his senior year he ran an amazing 4.2 in the NFL Pro Combine and was drafted #7 pick overall by the Minnesota Vikings. He played for 5 years and eventually retired from football due to injuries. His professional sports career was not over though and he continued it by playing for the New York Mets baseball team. An unprecedented move after not playing baseball for nearly 10 years.
We are most pleased to add D.J. to our team of qualified instructors. His expertise in sports makes him one of the most experienced members of our staff. Along side Mike Maleski and Dr. Morgan we have the most experieced trainers in Hampton Roads.

Musclemania Superbody Universe in Miami
After 3 years of trying to work on my symmetry and to rehabilitate my left knee, I decided to return to the stage in the Universe in Miami. I entered the Masters division which includes men over the age of 40 years old. I have done extensive research and study of my own physiology to try to achieve the best physique possible in the most healthy way. I feel I did my personal best. In the sport of bodybuilding that is all one can hope for. Subjectivity is part of the sport. One must accept that or you can become frustrated with your placing. It is best to go out and improve your own physique and if you place than feel blessed that a few judges felt you were one of the best. All that said, I got 3rd place. I felt that it was a first class show with very serious bodybuilders. I was pleased to have placed. I enjoyed the competition and the thrill of being on stage. It is the closest thing to competing on the football field that I have anymore. I was impressed with the 1st and 2nd place gentlemen. One was from Africa and the other was from Holland. They were serious professional men who chose this show for its ethics on drug testing and the emphasis on symmetry, fitness, and quality of posing. Not just freaky size, but on the balance of muscle on the frame. I hope you enjoy the pictures. I will be posting more in the next couple days. If you would like to see more pictures go to www.myspace.com/tjmo22. Thank you for all those that have given me support in my endeavor to be Mr. Wellness. Dr. TJ

Bigger Faster Stronger Class 3/3/07
Saturday's class was comprised of football players. Like I have said before, the nature of the class will take on the needs of the athletes that participate. I was impressed with all the effort given. We workded on our usual priorities. Explosion and first step quickness. Speed in increments of 10, 15, and 20 second endurance. Focus under fatique. We implemented neck and trap work. Lower abdominal strength for the core. Good job! Get your protein. Drink your water. Take your vitamins. Get 8 hours of sleep. Keep up your grades. Class will be next Saturday at 8:30am.

Bigger Faster Stronger Class
Today was a great class! The efforts were outstanding. Preston tied Maurice's Broad Jump Record with an amazing leap of 9'6". This was especially tough considering that it was the last test for the day. It should be noted that Tajh Boyd bettered his pushup mark to 96 in 2 minutes. I was impressed with Elle and Tory Morgan's efforts. After a gruelling Car Push they both performed new PR's in Broad Jump and Pushups. Each athlete made a measured step to meet their goals. Chandler Fenner continues to show his leadership by example. Each event is attacked with the same intensity he has for the game of football. My QB's are showing why they are the recruits that they are. Troy, Tajh, and Pat are like watching Dan Marino, Steve McNair, and John Elway as kids. There are so many bright points I could recognize every kid. Joe, Willie, TaSean, Mason, Pat, Rudy, and every athlete showed their mettle today. With the end of basketball it was great to have Darius Johnson showing his leaping ability. The highlight of the day came with the motivational talk by our very own Kwame James. A National Hero and great athletic role model. Thank You Kwame!

Bigger Faster Stronger Record Holders
Saturday's class was once again one of great efforts. It is amazing to see such talent in the gym every Saturday. Of course there are the Fenner men, but such untapped talent in Tajh, Reggie, TaSean, Elle, Tory, and Chris. For those that did not get the word that class was changed to 2pm and showed up at our usual time at 8:30am, I am sorry. We will resume class next Saturday at our usual time of 8:30am.

The path to success is measured in small deliberate steps. Saturday is the day you can make a consistent and deliberate step to your goals.
